5 Reasons Why My Air Conditioner May Not Be Working

Unfortunately, things do not always work out as planned. Inevitably, things are going to go wrong with your AC unit. That said, there can be any number of reasons – and in order to best remedy the problem, it’s best to know what you might be dealing with so that you can know how best to solve it and keep that AC unit running smoothly and efficiently.

Your coils are dirty

If the HVAC system in your home is not cleaned or serviced on a regular basis, then dirt, dust, and other debris can build up on the coils of both your indoor and outdoor unit. When this happens, then the system is unable to efficiently remove the heat from your home. So in essence, you are circulating air that is the same as the room, which is not particularly effective. So check and make sure this is no debris buildup on your coils or to see if it could be the culprit. And if it is, one of the technicians at Air Management can come out and clean them.

Low or leaking refrigerant

For those not familiar with the term, refrigerant is a liquid your air conditioning unit uses in order to take the heat and humidity out of your home and cycle in the fresh, cool air in the summertime. But sometimes, it leaks, which can cause subsequent issues like your air conditioner not working. Basically, having a low level of refrigerant due to leaks from holes in the lines is another issue that can prevent your system from properly being able to cool the air that is blowing into your home. Which defeats the purpose. If you find that this is an issue, or suspect that it may be the cause of an inefficient unit at work, we at Air Management can come out to your home and replenish the refrigerant to get you back up and running.

Dirty air filters

This is something that may seem fairly simple or an afterthought, but it’s no less important. One of the first things it is prudent to check on if someone notices their unit not working properly is whether or not their filters have been changed recently. Energy Star, a program run by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy that promotes energy efficiency, suggests changing them at least every three months. The reason? A dirty air filter – or filters – can decrease air flow and make the system work harder to keep your home cool in the summer, thus wasting energy. A clean filter will also prevent dust and dirt from building up in the system, which would cause you to need more constant maintenance or have a system failure.

Problems with the fan

The fan is a crucial component to any air conditioning system, as you have one in both the internal and external units to help blow cool air and expel the heated air outside the system. It may seem second nature to hear the fan blowing, but it is also crucial to check on it regularly. Notable issues that can potentially crop up with the fans in your unit are a bad motor, poor lubrication, excessive dirt and debris buildup, or something else entirely. If any single one of these problems gets noticed, it’s important to take care of it as soon as possible – because fan issues can cause a lack of efficient airflow and subsequent AC problems that prevent you from properly cooling your home.

Tripped circuit breaker

This one is unique in the sense that it could potentially be caused by any one of the aforementioned issues – making it perhaps the most important one to note so that you can check to see if any of them are present. If your unit keeps on tripping the circuit breaker, it is most likely caused by decreased airflow, a lack of refrigerant, or something else entirely such as frayed electrical connections. It might also be caused by your condenser coils or other components having been clogged by some sort of dirt or debris, or because your condenser coils are overheating.

Whatever the case may be, the constant tripping of a circuit breaker should be a notice that something is up with your system. And we know not everyone is an AC expert, so give a professional at Air Management a call today!
